Corn Fritter Casserole is a Friendsgiving or Thanksgiving favorite, and couldn’t be any easier!
Read moreThe Buzz Behind Locally-Sourced, Salvaged Lumber
These types of buzz words are different than, say "organic" or "fair trade" which (if being adhered to properly) follow an industry practice which is measurable and standardized.
Lately, I've found myself doing more and more marketing for Content's overnight accommodations and John's woodworking. And, inevitability I find myself pondering the same buzzwords that make our grocery bill higher from time-to-time.
For instance, here's our NJ Shaped Cutting Board made from locally-sourced, salvaged Ambrosia Maple.
But, aside from the hype, there are real benefits to these buzzwords- and yesterday, I had the opportunity to bring "handmade", "locally sourced" and "salvaged" to life with a trip to John's favorite sawyer - named Bob.
For John, this is a punch-drunk, pin-up, wood grain dream sequence. But, it's also the core of Content Woodworking.
The wood John uses is all from New Jersey, and has been salvaged by Bob. "Salvaged" here means wood that was not harvested to be lumber, but ends up being cut down as a byproduct of some other initiative like, clearing a lot for construction.
I realize that buying local is not always an option, but when it is there are a ton of reasons why it's beneficial. Buying local strengthens our communities, directly supports other local small businesses (like Bob), creates and maintains local jobs, and reduces our carbon footprint.
So, buy local! Because chances are their buzzwords are more than just hype.

This year, I decided to re purpose my Halloween decor, and not buy anything new. Don't get me wrong, with almost 10 years of Halloween party hosting on my resume, I had plenty to work with.
Also, I'm not a kitschy Halloween decorator, and prefer to use common household items in creative ways to suggest spook. I also love the Dollar Store, so my displays usually max out at $5.

We still don't have official names for our guest rooms.
But, more often than not, guest room #2 is referred to as "Nate's Room" because our friend Nate is the first person to brave an air mattress overnight in there, way before we ever imagined rehabbing #westsideguestside.
UPDATE: You can now see this before + after renovation featured on Apartment Therapy!
Guest Room #2 is currently available on AirBnB, as well, so come spend the weekend with us this fall!
Now for a quick trip down Foreclosure Lane.
The rooms layout remained the same, except for the addition of a closet and moving the bathroom door to the left slightly to make more room for the shower in the ensuite bathroom.

And now for the good stuff, the afters!
INGREDIENTS:
BED: Typically, our home decor is thrifted or handmedown, but when I saw this bedframe on super, closeout, rock bottom sale, I did what any rational person would do. I bought 3 of them.
While planning the design of the guest rooms, I'd struggled to imagine how they would feel cohesive when considered side by side. And yea, I realize how neurotic that sounds, but these matching beds have become the structure on which all of the guest rooms design have been built.
Purchased from Home Decorators Outlet. Though it's new, it take on the feel of an old iron bed, without me spending every weekend scouring Craigslist and flea markets.

RUG: Overstock.com NuLoom braided
DESK: This desk is a culmination of John + I at our finest. I scored the legs, which are from an industrial sewing machine, at a garage sale for $15 and John made the top. He was lightly instructed NOT to buy any wood for this project, and rather used only reclaimed wood we had at the house. CORNER CHAIR: An antique once used as a porch chair. Arrow accent pillow
BENCH: An antique from my parent's barn which I reupholstered with $3 bargain bin fabric from AC Moore. Of course, I bought the fabric with no original purpose, and it ended up being just enough for the bench.

AV CART: Road side find, vintage audio visual cart, my Dad dropped off. Dismantled, cleaned, and repainted.
